What is the I-90 Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card?

The I-90 application is used by lawful permanent residents to apply for replacement or renewal of existing Permanent Resident Card. Conditional permanent residents may also use this application to apply for replacement of an existing Permanent Resident Card.

Who can apply for Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card?

A Lawful Permanent Resident that needs to Replace his Resident Card because of the expiration, having lost, damage or got stolen hers/his Card, or other special circumstances. A Conditional Permanent Resident should apply for a permanent green card by completing the I-751 application and supporting documentation, rather than form I-90 application

A Lawful Permanent Resident should apply to renew his green card if it has expired or will expire within the following 6 months. All the other applicants may apply whenever special circumstances apply.

What is the Processing Time for the Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card?

Ideally, USCIS expects to process this application within 4-6 months. Currently this process requires 8-12 months or longer. Processing Times change according to the conditions of the specific case and the USCIS case backlog and processing priorities.

What is the processing of this Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card?

  1. Submit application with the Filing Fee or the Fee Waiver to the right USCIS Office or via Online through the USCIS Official Website.
  2. Receive Form I-797C, Notice of Action Receipt Notice: This will confirm that USCIS has received the case and the Filing Fee or the Fee Waiver (which has been granted) and provide you with a case number for future reference or tracking of your case status.
  3. Receive Form I-797C, Notice of Action, Biometrics Appointment: This will inform the Applicant of the Location, Date and Time to attend to the Biometrics Appointment. If the applicant cannot attend to the appointment, it is very important to respond with the same notice to USCIS and wait for a new scheduled date.


    The Biometrics Appointment is for USCIS to obtain a Photograph and the Fingerprints of the Applicant, with the purpose to conduct a Background Check with the FBI and determinate if the applicant does or does not have any Criminal Issue that does not allow them to obtain a green card.


    In some cases, USCIS can request any more evidence before they can issue a final decision on the case. If this is the case, the Applicant should receive a Notice of Action Requesting specific information.
  4. Receive Form I-797C, Notice of Action, Approval Notice: This will inform the Applicant that their case has been approved and that they should be receiving the New Permanent Resident Card soon.
